This video was made in response to the Your Video Here exhibtion in Limerick, Ireland. The artists involved were asked to submit videos and remix each others videos. This was a remixed video utilising Russel Chartier's "Confined".
The original score was, first of all, slowed down 800 times using the paulstretch program that first gained popularity when a meme appeared online slowing down the Justin Bieber song “U Smile” (without pitch distortion) so that it sounded like something akin to Sigur Ros. The main references in the video content are Chantal Akerman’s News From Home (1977), the Jay-Z video for “Empire State of Mind” and Chris Marker’s La Jetée (1962). In Akerman’s film, the final sequence is a long shot leaving Manhattan on the Staten Island Ferry with the skyline (complete with world trade center towers) disappearing into the mist. I was able to find a tourist youtube clip that showed nearly the exact same scene (minus the towers, of course) and overlayed it with an excerpt of the English translation of the Akerman voiceover. The images from CONFINED-10-01-2 showed stereotypical New York sites including the Statue of Liberty and the NYC subway which called to mind Jay-Z’s love letter to New York, “Empire State of Mind”, but also a sci-fi vibe consistent with Marker’s film. |
