This piece consists of wireless networks around a neighbourhood in Evanston, Illinois, USA. While working on the Wireless Chicago on the “L" project, I became interested in the messages that wireless network names (SSIDs) were broadcasting to the public. Most of these network names were isolated and independent of one another in terms of their names or messages, and I began to wonder what it would be like if they spelled something out or created a collective message with the other networks near them. In response, I orchestrated the inception of an invisible poetic sculpture around my neighborhood. I wrote a letter to all of my neighbors, persuading them to change their network names to the lines of the William Carlos Williams poem The Red Wheelbarrow. Interestingly, one neighbor decided to personalize the line they chose, which highlighted an interplay between their interest in this communal activity and their desire to maintain their individuality.
